A national foundation wanted to help people living in tough neighborhoods tell their own stories—first-person accounts of the challenges they face and some inspired solutions. Real Stories was the result, a series of brochures and online stories. Developed the concept; researched and wrote the stories and coordinated production.

The foundation needed an overview brochure to reach policymakers, international leaders, and grantees with information about their initiatives written in a tone that was urgent, temperate, and clear. Researched and wrote the text for the brochure.

Fundraising brochure
University of Washington

A major university launched a multi-million dollar fundraising campaign. Each school took on the task of raising some of the funds. The school of social work needed a brochure that would help make the case and highlight the qualities that distinguish the school from others in the field. Researched and wrote the brochure and profiles.

Awareness campaign
Denshō

A young dot.com retiree founded an innovative web site (densho.org) to preserve the testimonies of Japanese Americans who were incarcerated during World War II and to teach future generations. The challenge was to reach older Japanese Americans, who might not even own a computer, and convince them of the value of the digital online archive and how to use it. A beautiful print brochure made the case and also solicited their support.

Newsletter
Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia

An order of religious women committed to human rights and dignity wanted a story for their quarterly newsletter about the response of ordinary Americans to the catastrophe of Katrina. The Sisters offered small grants to parishes that wanted to send volunteers to New Orleans. This is a story about parishioners who responded to their call.
